How many times have we been there? We have a plan, we have a goal, we have an idea of where we will be and then a train hits us and everything changes.
If you had told me when I was in high school that I’d be a pastor on staff at a church getting to work with teens and edit videos, I would have laughed at you. I graduated high school with plans of becoming a big time movie director. I had stood in front of the mirror thousands of times preparing my acceptance speech for movie of the year. I knew who I was going to marry, where I was going to live, how much money I was going to have. I had it all planned out.
But then it changed. And I couldn’t figure out why. I was going to school to study what I thought was film but suddenly my interest changed. The relationship I was in ended and I couldn’t figure out why. Suddenly I went from knowing exactly where I’d be in 5 years to not knowing where I was going to be tomorrow.
The only question I could ask was why? Why God? Why did you take this away from me? Why have you changed my heart? Why have you left me here not knowing which way to go?
Six years later I can stand here today and honestly say that where I am now is better than where I was going. What I am doing today is more rewarding than any award I could get for a movie. And who I am married to I am more in love with than I have ever been.
Maybe you’re where I was 6 years ago and it feels like God has taken all your dreams and all your plans and tossed them. If that’s you, then I want to give you some things to think about to help you out.
1. Thank God. Why? Because even though you don’t know it yet, the plans He has for you are better than the plans you had for yourself.
2. Don’t focus on the future, focus on right now. Have you ever tried walking while staring really far off? Typically when you do that you end up losing balance and tripping over your own feet. Right now you need to be focused on right now. Get your feet back on the ground and take one step at a time.
3. Let go of what was and take hold of what is. Sounds like Yoda but it’s true. You’ve got to let go of what you once had or what you didn’t have. Why? Because if your hands are full with what’s in the past then you’ll never be able to take hold of what God has for you in your future.
It sucks when things don’t go the way you want. Especially when you’re as stubborn as I am. If you’re like me when God changed my plans chances are you’re trying to figure out a way to fix everything back to the way it was. DON’T. Accept where God has you and where he is taking you. It’s God. Do you really think your plans are better than His?
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” -Jeremiah 29:11
